That's true kre8tive. I won it back in 2001 and that was the first Lion ever in the Middle East. The category was "best use of newspaper". The ad was a special operation for Gulf Bank.

Kuwait is not even there yet, Joe's lion is a starting point which means creatives in Kuwait has to do more than just thinking.. making it happen is the challenge. NO GUTS, NO GLORY.. baby!

Joe, See where the Creative standard is going in Kuwait, the Same BBDO won a lion and did the recent crapy Chevy Ad. To whom we will blame then? Give me an answer pls.

Adchemist dude, same BBDO right, but different creative heads, One was technical, the other was practical.. but that doesn't answer the long lost unanswered question: Are they Creative and Brave? Still a huge question remains.

adchemist, we have to understand the market and the client. Yes I did I win a Lion, in addition to a handful of International certificates from the LIAA, the New York Festivals and the Epica, while I was with BBDO. BUT I also have done some very bad ads, may be worse than this one, I admit. You cannot change a client, all you can do is try to educate him and most of the times you will fail, because in Kuwait your client is someone who got promoted to marketing for his success in sales…
So keep on trying to minimise the dammage, and jump on that opoportunity whenever it comes your way and fight for it teeth, arms & legs.

At present, in Kuwait; you lose your skills and passion of creativity, a local award of recognition for best design will unveil and improve competition of creativity.

Joe, but the Lion you got by the way was for the use of media, I don't think Kuwait has won any Lion with regards to creatives.. Only TONIC-Dubai so far.. There's a lot potentials in Kuwait when it comes to creativity.. (bearing in mind the difficulty of the market) the Challenge is that Creatives has to make it through.

A lion is a lion, it is awarded for creativity. The category is of little importance; best use of media is like best use of outdoor, ambient, print, direct or audiovisual. if you categorize the lions, than every time a country wins, it will claim being the first ever to win in that particular category and the one-upmanship will never end! I agree there's a lot of potential in Kuwait, the challenge is great but we'll make it.

With all of the handful of international certificates along with the Lion that you have, Joe I haven't seen any ideas from FCB that came jumping out of the page, (well, never mind the scams) but I assume clients nowadays are looking for agencies with ideas that would really rock and with all the credentials you have, definitely they'd listen to you and gain confidence with the agency and probably release campaigns that justifies all of it-(award-winning). I agree at the end of the day clients have to make their business going great, but don't you think that creatives also have to be the same? because these metals would mean nothing if creatives end up doing what the client is saying, it's never been a one-way street.

Interesting discussion. Honestly, looking at the ad I see an interesting approach… Now what spoiled it is the execution, as most of the time it goes. Of course, client has his marks all over it, you don't need an expert to prove that :)
Now as this is my first post on this blog, I would like to note that our industry is still in its infancy in Q8. I know, sometimes you manage to score here and there with something out of the box, but most of the time it is cliche ads that even don't deserve to be put in portfolios… The market needs education, and it needs it a lot. My personal opinion, you can never blame the client alone… Agencies, suppliers, media, pr… Everyone is behind the poor quality in Q8. And no one is going the extra mile, everyone is going after the easy buck. We just need to keep on pushing the envelope bit by bit…

The basic point is in this market most of the ad peoples are not coming from an advertising background nor art back ground. In the other part of the world if you want get into a mainstreem advertising business as an art/ creative you should have an art/communication graduation, or if you are going to join in business department you need a graduation (or post graduation) in business/advertising or marketing degree. How many art directors or araphic designers are from an art/commuication college in Kuwait? How many Account handlers sre studied Business management here?
So we need educated people inside the agency to educate the clients in the market. Not only the photoshop operators and powerpoint presenters sadely:(
Dear HR, Trasferable residence and driving licence are not the mandatory scales in advertising!

hi guys, I am on vacation and unfortunately cannot continue this interesting conversation. Nevertheless, my answer to you kre8tive, is that winning awards is not in our hands, what's in our hands is producing some award winning creative work which we have done at FCB. We weren't lucky with getting the awrds yet, but I am sure that day will come. Good luck to all of you in winning awards, I truely believe that every award won by any of us will do good for all of us. Now I'll leave you in peace and enjoy my vacation. Best regards to you all.
